2016 Girls' State Meet Wrap Up

Years from now people will say, “Remember the 2016 Girls State Meet?” 
The 2016 Girls State Meet provided a reseeded 4-heat, 6 lane meet,
THREE new state records, one tied state record, 7 automatic All-American times, 18 All-American consideration swims, and amazing time drops throughout the day!

The IHSSCA welcomed Alexa Mehesan from West Des Moines Valley, Trudy Henkels from Dubuque Wahlert, and Randi Peterson-Henderson from Cedar Falls into the Hall of Fame.  Newton Coach Sarah Patterson was presented with the IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction award.  Congratulations to all!

The Ames Little Cyclones once again claimed a dominant team title with 341
points.  The Little Cyclones climbed the podium an impressive 13 times.  The
Medley Relay of Jazlyn Horras, Molly Winer, Grace Snyder and Sophie Sorenson set a state record of 1:43.78.  Sophie Sorenson tied her state record winning the 100 Backstroke in a time of 54.61.  Ames then capped the day with a state record in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:28.74 using Sophie Sorenson, Olivia Jenks, Morgan Rosser, and Amy Fedderson.  Johnston took second with 197 team points while Bettendorf took home third place honors with 189 points.

Senior MyKenzie Leehy from Lewis Central was recognized as the State Athlete of the Year.  MyKenzie took gold in the 200 Freestyle with an All-American consideration swim and won the 100 Freestyle in a state record time of 50.29, achieving automatic All-American status.

Johnston stand out Lexi Horner capped an excellent swimming career taking
double gold in the Individual Medley and repeating as champion in the
100 Breaststroke.  Coach Shari Walling and her staff were voted IHSSCA
Coaching Staff of the Year.

Congratulations to all state meet athletes on a great meet and a great season. Thanks go out to the Marshalltown Community Y and the many volunteers that help put on a great championship event!
