2015 Girls State Meet Wrap Up

The 2015 Girls State Meet provided plenty of excitement!  The meet produced TWO new state records, 4 Automatic All-America times, and 11 All-American consideration times.   Significant time drops highlighted an exciting day of swimming.

The IHSSCA welcomed Megan Lonergan from Bettendorf,  Meghan Sieversten from Kennedy, and Ann Walker from Des Moines Roosevelt into the Hall of Fame.  Macon City Coach Steve Hugo was presented with the IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction.  Congratulations to all!

The Ames Little Cyclones won a convincing team title with 355 points.  Ames
collected 14 podium performances, Sophie Sorenson’s state record backstroke, and claimed all three relays, with the foursome of Grace Snyder, Olivia Jenks, Morgan Rosser, and Sophie Sorenson putting an exclamation point on the day with a state record 400 Free Relay in a time of 3:29.15.  Coach Flannery and his staff were also recognized as coaching Staff of the Year by IHSSCA members.  Pleasant Valley was second in the team standings with 197.5 points followed by Johnston with 188 points.

Junior Sarah Schemmel was the State Athlete of the Year.  Sarah had Automatic All-American swims capturing the 50 and 100 Freestyle events.  Johnston’s junior, Lexie Horner was a double gold winner in the 200 Individual Medley and100 Breaststroke. SE Polk senior, Allysa Fluit capped a stellar high school career in capturing the 200 and 500 Freestyle events.

Congratulations to all state meet athletes on a great meet and a great season. Thanks go out to the Marshalltown Community Y and the many volunteers that help put on a great championship event!
